Pax Christi Upstate NY Ben Salmon Chapter
In March of 1945, as World War II was coming to an end, French and German Catholics came together to question why Christians slaughtered one another with apparently no reflection on the teachings of the nonviolent Christ. The organization, Pax Christi or Peace of Christ was born. It became an international organization. Fifty years ago this August, Pax Christi USA was established. For a time, it was active in upstate New York. For reasons mostly vague or unknown, Pax Christi gave way to other groups and some benefits resulted as Pax Christi members took their zeal for peace to a variety of good non-sectarian peace groups.
Now, we want to revitalize the message of the Peace of Christ. Ben Salmon eloquently professed his Catholic faith as the reason for his conscientious objection to killing his fellow human beings during World War 1. Ben Salmon was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a military court even though he was never in the military.
We hope new Pax Christi members will look over this website devoted to Ben Salmon. Please consider reading the letter to Cardinal Cupich of Chicago and please do sign onto the Sainthood letter with a brief comment. Pax Christi is an ecumenical organization--open to all Christians and non-Christians who believe in the worth and dignity of all their brothers and sisters.
