On All Saints Day 2017, Ben Salmon's grave was marked with the stone shown below. The Friends of Franz and Ben collected donations to have the stone placed on Ben's unmarked grave in Mt Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Ill. Further information is on the Memorial page.

I was born 2 months after Ben's death. Respect to every single act of courage in his struggle against war and militarism. Enraged that the State forced him like Jaggerstatter to choose between his principles and his family. He needs no sullied canonization. He is an icon.

I never knew of Ben Salmon until Veteran For Peace brother Jack Gilroy informed me of his courage to stand fast by his belief that no war can be justified. He was catholic which makes me wonder if Catholic high schools and colleges present him and what he stood for when teaching about World War I.

I just discovered that Ben Salmon is buried in the cemetery I have driven by every day for fifteen years. The Findagrave.com website has only a photo of the gravesite before the headstone was placed. Maybe someone can submit a current photo with the headstone to update their information? I am amazed that there was no headstone before this, to honor this man and his indomitable conviction.

Thanks for bringing this up. There is now a photo of the "new" gravestone at findagrave.com.

I visited Ben's grave today. Took some doing to find it - there are hundreds of graves just within the block where he is, and his flat marker is tucked behind someone else's big white angel-decorated monument. It was half-covered in grass clippings. But there he was. I cleaned up the clippings and pulled the encroaching greenery from the edges of the stone. And paid my silent respects to him - and the many others who have stood with him in their beliefs and courage. Leave a Reply. |
